The principal objective of the design was to create a network which would streamline the city centre's future development. The area would be integrated on several levels: functional, spatial, communication and visual. The design is based on a clear arrangement of various public spaces - the market square, city square, green square and a promenade - composed into a communication system for pedestrians. The new market square is the heart of the arrangement and it is located where two new pedestrian routes cross. The system of squares in the centre is based on their variety. Enhancement and order in spatial relations was obtained by the introduction of dominating points and visual axes. At the roundabout, where a passage ends, a building-symbol was designed, which is a clearly defined and understandable sign within the space. The existing spatial disproportions became balanced by adding buildings of suitable capacities. |
