To recover for the city of Wrocław the area of Społeczny square appropriated by transport facilities we proposed the creation of three public spaces joined together, which would serve as the functional and structural skeleton of the entire concept. The main street - leading from Grunwaldzki bridge to the crossroad of Oławska and Zygmunta Krasińskiego streets - would become the compositive extension of the Grunwaldzka street axis, and from a functional point of view it would connect Grunwaldzki square with Oławska street, which leads to the Market Square. It would have a character typical for a city pedestrian street, with vehicle traffic limited to a minimum, and the slow traffic of public transport facilities. On both sides of the street, which would be full of greenery and small architectural elements, there would be blocks of buildings arranged in regular sequences, housing shops and offices on lower floors. The second important public space would be a passage for pedestrians and vehicle traffic going from the north-western to the eastern direction, and connecting Juliusza Słowackiego park and the 'museums district' with recreational areas over the River Oława. This would be a wide footpath leading from the Old City (Wita Stwosza street) to the area of Na Grobli street, where the campus of Wrocław Technical University will be built in the future. The third element of the system would be the existing boulevards over the River Odra, located between the city centre and mouth of the Oława, which would be connected and partly lowered to the river level. The skeleton of the arrangement created by the mentioned lines and spaces would be fleshed out by the city, represented by quarters of development areas, separated by local driveways and small squares. |
