The object which is the subject of the design competition has extremely obliging location. On one side the vicinity of the XIX century impressive-looking development with Opera House in the front, on the other side, being revitalized area of the Wolności Square with the building of new Concert Hall. The structure of the building which results from functional program as well as the legally binding Masterplan is also very demanding design wise. On one hand the development is supposed to provide the back room functions for the Opera House, at the same time containing public courtyard/square delimited by the Masterplan guidelines, and constituting the frontage of the public areas of the Square and Old City Promenade. Having such a complex border conditions the designers put main pressure on the clarity and legibility of the spatial and formal solutions. The basic principle of the building shape was to fit the variable functions of the opera house in the formally homogenous volume and to unify the opera back room building mass with the commercial building planned aside. The general volume is split into two parts: opera house and commercial building. Three wings of the building surround inner courtyard which performs as a summer opera stage. Inner square opens towards the back facade of the existing Opera House and it’s partially roofed by the dynamically shaped skylight. The priority of shaping the space of the square, apart from it’s natural accessibility as the public square, were acoustic conditions of the organized performances and good visibility conditions for the number of spectators assumed in the program. Most important means of architectural expression applied are: articulation of the building facade as well as shaping ‘inner’, roofed space of the courtyard/summer stage. From the outside the building is quite modest. There are definitely richer architectonical means applied for shaping the space of the the inner courtyard. The shape of the facade of the inner square was submitted to the rigorous acoustic guidelines based on the precise analyses. Main external finishing material is architectural concrete varying in textures, according to the simplicity principle of the means of expression. There are granite and ceramic slabs applied on the floors. The finishing of the internal walls was designed as timber panels and architectural concrete.
