The competition task was to design three new buildings in Wolności square in Wrocław: a concert hall and facilities for the Wrocław Opera, a new part of the City Museum of Wrocław, and the underground and surface of the square itself. A uniform style for the entire area was considered the key objective. Wolności square is surrounded by listed buildings with sandstone facades, plastered or with red-brick facing. The new building complex combines with this environment by used three different granite types. The square's pavement would be covered with stone slabs arranged in a pattern. Solid, classic materials would underline the high status of this place, and a soft, balanced and simple architectural style of the designed buildings would add the impression of a monumental and elegant look. The edifice of the Concert Hall interacts with the environment and clearly indicates its function. In the daytime, when concerts are not usually held, the building remains dormant, and its exterior dark, granite walls remain in contrast to the opaque white glass protecting the building's interior. The shape of the most important room of the building hidden deep inside, the concert hall, is revealed and presented to passers-by. In the evening before concerts start, when dusk falls outside and the lights turn on in the foyer space, the dark granite structure disappears into the darkness. The illuminated white interior communicates something very important happening inside, and people entering the building feel that they are participating in an extraordinary event. |
