A new didactic building of Dolnośląska Szkoła Wyższa Towarzystwa Wiedzy Powszechnej (DSW TWP) was created as a result of the successful adaptation and extension of a conventional office building originating from the 1970s. The main building of the school houses classrooms and academic staff rooms. The parts added after extension house an assembly hall, library and multimedia lecture halls. The design idea was to minimize interference with an existing six-storey office building, and an attempt at using its spatial potential. The basic artistic motive, clear in shaping the entire building complex, is the simplicity of spatial solutions achieved by the composition of simple elementary blocks. Consequently - despite a complicated functional plan and some spatial complexity - a clear structure was successfully achieved. The vertical block of the existing office building was contrasted with the lower parts of the newly-built assembly hall, classrooms and library. The simplicity and elegance of the entire structure are underlined by finishing materials. The facades of the building were covered with slabs in three different shades of grey, creating an interesting geometrical arrangement underlining the building character. |
