The new building was located in an important part of the heart of the old city centre, where Kuźnicza street joins University Square. Its spatial context is created by buildings originating from different historical periods and characterized by various sizes and style. It reflects an attempt to incorporate the new building's structure in the existing context, respecting the dimensions of the surrounding buildings, with particular consideration to the fact that Wrocław University's Main Edifice plays a key role here. The designers rejected a clichéd imitation of historical forms, convinced that architecture, even if perceived merely as city decor, should be based on forms typical for the period of its creation. The building should communicate its function, and while its plan is complicated, revealing its internal structure seemed to be the right thing to do. While shaping the building's structure, interiors and architectural details, the designers referred to the rich tradition of Wrocław modernism. The dignity and prestige of the building's function was underlined by travertine facing inside and outside, and joinery in a tempered colour. From the functional and spatial point of view, the building is divided into two wings. The wing stretching along Kuźnicza street and Uniwersytecki Square houses the main entrance on the ground floor, a two-level hall, a cloak-room and a restaurant. On the higher floor, there are seminar-rooms and a faculty library. At the side of Uniwersytecka street two spacious lecture halls were designed, one above the other. A drive-in entrance to the inner yard and a two-level underground car park are located on this side. Interiors were designed using simple, balanced forms and building materials: stone, glass and natural wood. The achieved result represents a compromise between the grand-style of a public utility building and the simplicity and functionality of an educational facility, which makes this building - normally crowded with students - a potential conference centre. |
